USLw Norcal Division

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL W League today announced that six expansion clubs – Academica SC, California Storm, Marin FC, The Olympic Club, Pleasanton RAGE and San Francisco Glens – will join Oakland Soul and Stockton Cargo to create the NorCal Division, which will take the field in the 2023 season.

“The establishment of a NorCal Division is a watershed moment for the W League,” said Amanda Vandervort, USL Super League and W League President. “Paired with our Northwest Division, the W League’s footprint is now truly national, which is what we’ve always envisioned. Creating this division with clubs of this caliber and notable sporting history is thrilling and we look forward to seeing these clubs excel on and off the pitch.”

The division welcomes clubs of several different backgrounds and histories in the sport. Four of which already compete, or will take the field in 2023, as part of the USL ecosystem in USL Championship or League Two.

“We’re so excited to welcome six highly competitive clubs, bringing the league to over 60 clubs in its sophomore season which is an incredible milestone,” said Joel Nash, USL Vice President of Youth and Pre-Professional Properties. “Northern California is home to some of the county’s most vibrant and talented soccer, from players and clubs to fans and their communities and I believe these founding clubs are a perfect representation of that.”

Academica SC was founded by a group of Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands in 1972. 50 years later, Academica will join the W League and showcase talent from the 209 – Turlock, Calif. The club’s mission is to have players who find pride in representing their communities while competing at the highest level. Academica also announced that the club will field a men’s side in League Two.

The California Storm was founded in 1995 by Jerry Zanelli and has had a host of notable players play for the Storm, including Brandi Chastain, Sissi and Julie Foudy.

“The California Storm is very excited to be part of the launch of the USL W League in California,” said Jamie Levoy, Cal Storm Executive Director. “We need more options for women to play here in the U.S. The USL has proven to be a successful organization that promotes professionalism for the athletes and fans. We look forward to working with them to continue to grow the game for women and inspire the next generation.”

Founded in 2004, Marin FC was created specifically to support the development of elite competitive soccer teams and players in Marin County. The team’s mission statement boils down to ‘inspire and advance.’ Marin FC’s W League team, the Siren, completes the club’s parallel player development pathway as the club also has a men’s squad, the Legends, that compete in League Two.

The Olympic Club, founded in 1860, is one of America’s oldest athletic clubs. The Olympic Club has been a home for elite amateur athletes since its inception, with over 90 Olympic Games medalists in its history. The Winged “O” has fielded locally competitive women’s soccer teams since 2002.

“The Olympic Club prides itself on fostering athletes pursuing the highest levels of amateur sports in their respective fields of play,” said Nick Lusson, Olympic Club Athletic Director. “We’re thrilled to further accomplish that objective by bringing our women’s soccer team to the USL W League. It’s absolutely vital that we have a robust and high-quality league like this on a national level and we’re honored to get to play a role in making that happen here in Northern California.”

Established in 1983, Pleasanton RAGE is committed to holistic player development with a particular focus on leadership and community service.

“Pleasanton RAGE is thrilled to be joining the USL W League,” said Erin Sharpe,  Director of Coaching at Pleasanton RAGE. “The investment that the W League is making to improve and grow the women’s game at the pre-professional level in Northern California is an important one and we are proud to be a part of it.  The core tenets of the USL W League align with our own and we look forward to providing an exceptional experience for our players and fans as a member of this great organization.”

The San Francisco Glens were founded in 1961 by Dr. Michael McFadden as an adult soccer team in the local amateur league with players primarily from the Irish-American community. Today, the Glens have grown into the largest soccer club in The City, with over 1,100 players at various levels. The Glens’ mission is to give local players of all backgrounds the opportunity to compete at the highest level their dreams and determination will allow.  The club also recently broke ground on a new waterfront stadium on Treasure Island.

In addition to the six clubs, previously announced clubs Oakland Soul and Stockton Cargo will also compete in the NorCal division.

2020 RAGE Scholarship Award for Excellence in Academic Achievement and Service to the Community

2020-04-01T22:17:02-07:00March 31st, 2020|

Each year, Pleasanton RAGE Girls Soccer Club recognizes and rewards scholar athletes who demonstrate RAGE excellence in academic achievement and service to the community. Two $1,875.00 scholarships for college are awarded to high school seniors who plan to attend a 4-year or 2-year college, or a vocational or art school and have a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher. Applicants are considered based on the following criteria: academic achievement; commitment to volunteerism/service; and number of years playing for RAGE. In addition, an essay is submitted defining one of the RAGE core values and explaining how the value is learned while playing soccer and serving the community.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients!

Juliana Gerard

Juliana has played soccer for Pleasanton RAGE for 11 years, most currently as a member of the Recreational Program on the U19 team, Skyfall.

A senior at Quarry Lane School in Dublin, CA, Juliana has a GPA of 4.5 and will be attending UCLA in the Fall.  She plans on majoring in Biology.

To date, Juliana’s academic honors and accomplishments include the Brandeis Book Award for Social Action and Civic Engagement; National Spanish Exam Awards; National Merit Scholarship Commended Student; Quarry Lane School Dean’s List Honor Roll, 9th – 12th grades; International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate; National Honor Society.

Equally important and impressive is Juliana’s community service, specifically her involvement in the following: Student Mentoring & Interactive Learning Exchange (SMILE), an organization that she created; Girl Scouts, earning the highest honor, the Gold Award; the Quarry Lane School Environmental Club, Wildlife Club, and the Annual Futsal Tournament for which she was co-director; Congregation Beth Emek/Open Heart Kitchen.

Juliana chose the RAGE core value “Respect” for her essay topic. She says that she is “proud to be part of the RAGE community because we are a league full of strong-willed, dedicated, and respectful girls.” She will continue to carry the core values with her as she begins her journey to college.

Danya Gonzalez

Danya has played soccer for Pleasanton RAGE for 2 years as a member of the Competitive Program on the 2002 Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) team.

A senior at John C. Kimball High School in Tracy, CA, Danya has a GPA of 4.2 and has committed to playing college soccer at Cal State University, East Bay where she will major in Kinesiology.

To date, Danya’s academic honors and accomplishments include Academic Block K for attaining a 4.0 GPA or higher throughout her high school career; Valley Oak League (VOL) Scholar-Athlete Award, for her 2 seasons of track & field and 4 seasons of soccer.

Rounding out Danya’s excellence in academics is her community volunteerism, specifically her service to the following: St. Bernard’s Catholic Church where she spent 2 weeks every summer for the last 6 years mentoring the youth at Vacation Bible School; Tracy Youth Soccer League (TYSL), as a trainer of youth soccer teams in the local area.

Danya chose the RAGE core value “Greatness” for her essay topic. She says that for her “greatness itself encompasses all three of the other values within it. In order to be great you must have respect, a positive attitude, and also high expectations. … As RAGE players we are taught that greatness is… being motivated to develop new skills on and off the field and creating a legacy for others to follow.”

RAGE Training and NorCal Competitions Canceled Through the Month of April

2020-04-01T10:19:05-07:00March 12th, 2020|

While things certainly remain fluid, US Club Soccer determined today that based on federal recommendations, all in person soccer activities will continue to be suspended through at least April 30th.  We hope to return to the field in early May, but will continue to follow the lead of the CDC, state and local public health agencies, as well as our soccer governing bodies.  Based upon the mandates and recommendations of these agencies, we will update you as more is learned later in April.

At this stage NorCal Premier Soccer is considering several contingency plans, including an extension of the Spring competition season through the Summer, cancellation of the season altogether, and how the tryout/placement window will be handled if we are unable to conduct placements as planned in May.  Additionally, they are considering potential refunds based upon if and when the season resumes.  They will not be able to make this determination however, until a firm return-to-play date is established and potential season extension confirmed.  If we are refunded any of these competition related fees, we will certainly pass them back to our members and communicate that process as soon as we learn more.  The same is true for the ECNL, who is continuing to assess whether games and events will be cancelled or postponed.  That said, we will return to ECNL competition no earlier than May 4th, as our ECNL games on May 2nd and 3rd will no longer take place at that time.  We will also be able to address the handling of any previously collected travel funds once we receive confirmation regarding future ECNL events being cancelled versus postponed/rescheduled.

We are very pleased with the interaction and distance learning we’ve been able to conduct between our coaches and players over the past 2 weeks. Through the month of April, we will continue with this development platform and structure in order to take advantage of the opportunity to partner with our players in the following areas: growing their soccer IQ with our weekly match analysis and other tactical assignments; building their technical skills with assigned ball workouts; and maintaining fitness levels with our weekly workout assignments.  Additionally, our team video conference calls have been an important way for our coaches and players to check in on each other and maintain our team and community bonds.  Our coaches have been working hard to teach your daughters in this new sphere, and we thank them for their efforts in learning new technologies to optimize player development and create a positive experience for you.

We thank you for your partnership in these trying times and look forward to seeing you all out on the pitch as soon as we are able.  In the meantime, we wish you, your families and loved ones optimal health and safety.
