Wildcats topple 24th-ranked SPU

2017-02-06T23:39:05-08:00September 12th, 2014|

Box Score To deem the win historic might be a bit of a reach. But if the Chico State women’s soccer team plays the rest of the season like it did in a 1-0 victory over 24th-ranked Seattle Pacific Wednesday night, it is certainly one that the NCAA Championship Tournament committee will look back on at the end of the regular season.

Shelby Lanksbury notched her first collegiate goal Wednesday.

It was a night of firsts for the Wildcats. Head Coach Kim Sutton earned her first victory in a dozen attempts against the perennial West Region power. Shelby Lanksbury’s first collegiate goal was the game winner. And a number of Wildcats made their University Soccer Stadium debut in the 2014 home opener.

Chico State improved to 1-1-1 with the win against a Seattle Pacific squad that had opened the season with a 2-1 win against UC San Diego. The Falcons fell to 1-1-0.

Lanksbury’s goal was a team effort as no less than six Wildcats played a role. True freshman Pooja Patel – a revelation in her collegiate home debut – rolled a ball to Scroggins in the right corner to set the play in motion. Scroggins ripped a cross into the box that ricocheted out to Emily Shleppey. She slammed a low liner back into the mix that Megan Tabler got a boot on. The ball was deflected high into the air before Katie Brown headed it toward the goal. Linsdey Dias played it back deftly to Lanksbury, who hit a left-footed rocket inside the left post for the game-winner.

Patel entered the match in the 33rd minute and the tenor of the match changed completely.

Outshot 11-2 to that point, the speedy Patel paved the way as the Wildcats took control. Chico State enjoyed a 9-4 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks from that point forward.

The shutout was the 20th of goalkeeper Brianna Furner’s career, tying her with Nicole Adams for second in Chico State history. Furner made a trio of saves, including a perfectly timed punch of a header ticketed for the upper-V in the 24th minute.

She was aided by a backline of Jojo Smyth, Brooke Coelho (both making their Wildcats home debuts), Scroggins and Halima Abdelshife. They limited Seattle Pacific to shots from distance for most of the evening.

The victory was the 185th for Sutton at the Division II level, moving her to within one of the only other coach in the program’s history – Bob Russ – for 31st all time.

The Wildcats will attempt to get Sutton even with her predecessor Sunday when they host Saint Martin’s at 11 a.m. All Chico Youth Soccer League players and coaches who come to the match in uniform will get in free.

Soccer’s Precious Akanyirige Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

2017-02-06T23:39:05-08:00September 2nd, 2014|

Precious AkanyirigeSept. 2, 2014

IRVING, Texas – Baylor soccer forward Precious Akanyirige was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

The Pleasanton, Calif., native is the sixth all-time at BU to earn the newcomer honor and third under the Jobsons. Sophomore teammate Ashley York was the last to garner the honor as she did so after her first collegiate weekend on Aug. 27, 2013. Overall, the Bears have had 29 Big 12 weekly honorees and 12 under the Jobsons.

Akanyirige took just one shot in two games during the week but made it count, converting the game-winner as Baylor won at No. 23 BYU, 2-1, on Monday. After York corralled a goalie kick in the 46th minute, Akanyirige took the pass and booted a left-footed shot to the top left of the goal in a one-on-one situation with BYU’s goalie. Akanyirige has played in all four of BU’s games this year, including three starts, and has taken five shots (two on goal) in 179 minutes of action.

Akanyirige and Co. return to action this weekend at home as the Bears (3-1-0) face Incarnate Word on Friday at 7 p.m. CT on senior night and Northwestern State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

U18 Premier

U18 Premier

Coach Mike Beiler’s U18 Premier team had some success August 2nd and 3rd at the Sac United Suntan Classic. After only two weekends of playing together, the team brought home the U18/U19 Championship trophy! Besides battling the hot weather on Saturday the girls had to endure two rounds of penalty kicks in order to secure the First Place prize.

Well fought weekend win, girls!

The team also was the finalist in the Soccer by the Bay tournament August 16th and 17th. Facing the Marin FC team in the finals with limited substitutes, the team held the Marin to just one goal. Quite an accomplishment against a team who had outscored their opponents in bracket play 16-0.

Our girls are warriors – we are ready for league play!

RAGE LEADERSHIP PROJECT U12 Premier – Kieran Wallac

2017-02-06T23:39:06-08:00June 2nd, 2014|

My name is Kieran Wallace and I choose to work with E-Soccer as my Leadership Project. E-Soccer is a free soccer full-inclusion program for kids with special needs ages 5-18 run by Broch Brody. The special needs players learn basic soccer skills as well as how to interact with others. The volunteer coaching staff provides one-to-one or small-group training.  E-Soccer meets once a week and provides great encouragement and support to special needs families in the community.

I didn’t know anyone the first time I went to volunteer at E-Soccer but all of the volunteer coaches were very welcoming and I looked forward to working with the participants.  I felt very comfortable working with these kids because I have a 7 yr old brother with special needs.  I helped out with the 5-8 year olds.  It was really fun to use my experience with someone with special needs and teach the kids the sport I love.  In the beginning of the season, the older first time volunteer coaches who had no experience with kids with special needs would watch how I interacted with the athletes and got them to participate in the activities. You can’t treat these kids like babies.  Treat them like you would treat any kid their age.  They just need more encouragement and patience on your part to do what you are asking.  It meant a lot to me that I was able to serve as a role model for other volunteers and help make them more comfortable with these athletes.

After my first session, I had so much fun that I continued to volunteer coach every week for the entire spring season.  It was so rewarding to get the appreciation for my efforts not just in the kids bonding with me, but from the parents who were so thankful of someone taking the time to connect with their kids.

I would recommend volunteering for E-soccer to everyone.  It is a great way to share your love of soccer with kids and parents who are so appreciative of the time that you offer.  I can’t wait until the next season!

Jarreth Chan’s U17 Premier team ended their season with a Nor Cal State Cup Gold Division Championship win on May 10th! With the wind being a formidable issue, Rage had to come from behind twice. Both Julia Amos and Kendyll Woolsey scored to tie the game for Rage. At the end of regulation Rage found itself tied 2-2. After two 5 minute overtimes, the team found itself in a penalty kick situation. Practice and cool heads prevailed: Madi Mills, Rachel Barta, Katelyn Kramer, Monica Medor and Allie Engberson all buried their balls in the net. Gabriella Tassiano made 3 amazing stops against Cal Odyssey’s kicks resulting in a Pleasanton Rage win!

Great job Coach Jarreth and team orange!
